One day we came home into our house high above the Kailua-Kona bay. What we always do first after a day in the wild, we bring our technical equipment in position to get it reorganized for the next. So we did everybody in their own room.
So did Master Herwig Beo Labostella Steiner, when Kjell and myself suddenly heard him shout with a slight panic in his voice: „There is a little bird caught in the fireplace, still alive, and another one already dead.” It must have been caught inside for month as it was already mummified.
Okay then, we started our rescue operation. Kjell with all his experience with wild birds took over the lead. First obstacle, it was not easy to open this copycat of a fireplace. But finally we managed to open this weird thing. Kjell with both his hand slowly approached the bird and managed to catch hold of it.
Herwig and I were so excited and worried. Kjell just said, either it flies or it needs a place to rest after all this stress.
We dashed out to the balcony. Kjell opened his hands tenderly and off it was and flew towards the next big tree.
What a relief for us that the little creature was secure.
