3 times I have been on the Mauna Kea (4207m, 13,803 ft), and it has always been a very special experience. To watch the sunrise at this height, to breath the pure air over the clouds, to feel your heart beat up your throat, if you are moving too fast, and the slight dizziness that overcomes you, if your breathing is too hectically, to see your fingers turn blue from the temperature around the freeze point, and to sense your toes hurting due to the cold, gives you a body experience you rarely get without days or even weeks of climbing up a mountain’s peak. The car brings you up on Mauna Kea within 30 minutes, and that’s breath-taking in literal sense of the word.
