Overweight: Some feel fat by only gaining grams!

On Friday I talked to one of my friends, a triahtlete and definitely a skinny guy. He seemed covertly worried about his weight. He has been in the States for several weeks and told me slightly irritated: »You know, you cannot avoid it there, especially when you are staying with friends and relatives with a very different lifestyle that you start eating all this unhealthly fattening stuff as well.
I knew, I shouldn’t, but you know, on the other hand I liked the food.«

Pronounced ambivalence rocked him. On the one hand he sounded like feeling sorry that he let himself go, on the other hand he felt that he had deserved it to hang loose after the tough Hawaii race. He said more for himself than to me: »My body needed it. And you konw, I don’t care about my weight gain.« This he stressed several times. This »but I don’t care« showed very discretely but unmistakbly that he cared. He is not the only one of the athletes I know who hassles with grams of weight gain, while we normal people hassle with kilos.
