Ever since I am working and in the same time struggling with science, with the notions wrong or right attached to it, I was confronted with the terms complex and complicated. Usually science is received as complicated, equals difficult to understand or not understandable. But if you are familiar with a topic, the perspectives change. If somebody is able to reach you with his thoughts, ideas, facts, one name it… complicated things dissolve and become transparent equals simple or relatively simple.
If you are able to connect, which is not necessarily an intellectual process, then the term “complicated” is not an issue anymore, while complexity still exists as a basic feature or property of life and its environment. For me complexity is always there, whether it is our body, living organism such as plants or animals, be they small or big, the society or my favorite subject “biestmilch” 😉 , we look at a fabric of more or less densely connected nodes. Relations are the essence of complexity, and quality emerges from the quantity of relations. Uff, I start to get complicated and entangled … full stop now !!
The more connections or relations respectively refer to nodes in a web the more confused we get. But if we accept this basic principle of the universe, then we can reduce a complex situation and look at single relations that may in our opinion matter at a certain condition / state in time. This is what the very short and excellent presentation of Eric Berlow told me.
