Beneficial effects of exercise other than weight loss

Currently biestmilch is supporting a weight loss program of two of its friends. My view on this topic was from the beginning that the guys should not focus on weight loss only, should not put the scale into the center of concern as other health aspects may be even more important and significant, as there are blood pressure, aerobic capacity and resting heart rate.

Today I found confirmation in the current issue of the British Journal of Medicine. Dr. N. King and his co-workers from the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, School of Human Movement Studies, Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia published a study that underlines the approach that weight loss is not the one and only health benefit of exercise. Their study group of 58 overweight sedentary individuals undertook the effort of physical workouts 5 times a week for 12 weeks. Energy expenditure was 500 kcal per session. It is interesting and important to know that weight loss was less than expected for the majority of the participants. But they showed other positive changes which are of great significance for the health condition of an individual.

A brief summary of the study result:

The mean reduction in body weight was −3.3 (3.63) kg (p<0.01). However, 26 of the 58 participants failed to attain the predicted weight loss estimated from individuals’ exercise-induced energy expenditure. Their mean weight loss was only −0.9 (1.8) kg (p<0.01). Despite attaining a lower-than-predicted weight reduction, these individuals experienced significant increases in aerobic capacity (6.3 (6.0) ml/kg/min; p<0.01), and a decreased systolic (−6.00 (11.5) mm Hg; p<0.05) and diastolic blood pressure (−3.9 (5.8) mm Hg; p<0.01), waist circumference (−3.7 (2.7) cm; p<0.01) and resting heart rate (−4.8 (8.9) bpm, p<0.001). In addition, these individuals experienced an acute exercise-induced increase in positive mood.

Guys out there who are trying so hard to loose weight, don’t be so focused on the finger of your scale. There are many other aspects that make it worthwhile to reduce body weight. By the way, keep in mind, if you train, your muscle adapts to the stress stimulus and grows, and muscle is heavier than fat.
